At Swindon Borough Council, we want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.

Swindon continues to be one of the fastest growing towns in the Country with services adapting and developing to accommodate. We are looking to recruit a dynamic and self-motivated individual as an Animal Warden.

Your next role

The post holder will undertake the operational aspects of dog control, including collection and rehoming stray dogs, throughout the Borough including the encouragement of responsible ownership and enforcement of legislation regarding nuisance and dangerous dogs. The role will also include support to the Licensing Officers in all aspects of animal welfare legislation including the licensing of all animal functions.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Council’s duties with respect to the handling of stray dogs and its obligations under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Animal Welfare Act 2006.

In order to be considered for this post it is essential that you have recent experience of handling dogs of different breeds/types. This must include handling/care of nervous and otherwise potentially challenging dogs and you must have an in-depth, up to date knowledge of dog behaviour and recognise warning signs. A recognised qualification in animal care is highly desirable.

This is a forward facing customer service role that can include emotive and confrontational situations. Experience in customer service requiring empathy and diplomacy and with the ability to work on your own initiative, will be essential.

Knowledge of dog related legislation and enforcement experience is highly desirable.

The role also involves: detailed and accurate data entry, issuing Fixed Penalty Notices, gathering evidence and preparation of prosecution files, undertaking public promotional activities and assisting with any relevant complaints or duties such as licensing of animal premises.

This is a fast paced and sometimes demanding role which requires an enthusiastic and dedicated individual. Applicants must be able to work core hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday but occasionally work may be required outside of these hours.

Applicants should have GCSEs in Math and English at C grade or above or equivalent. This is required to ensure an appropriate degree of technical knowledge.
