JOB TITLE Animal Care Assistant
LOCATION Halifax, Huddersfield Bradford and District Animal Centre
ACCOUNTABLE TO Animal Centre Manager/Deputy Animal Centre Manager
RESPONSIBLE FOR
PRIME OBJECTIVES OF THE POST:
Provide care for animals in the Centre, establish good customer relations and maintain administration procedures in use.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
· Assist with the inspection and or treatment of animals by a veterinary surgeon, or other authorised person at the centre
· Carry out checks on animals, including the taking of temperature and inspection of eyes, ears nose and throat for signs of infection or abnormality.
· Report any abnormalities to Supervisor or member of management team.
· Prepare and provide food and water for all animals in the establishment
· Monitor weight gains and losses and liaise with the Supervisor.
· Be responsible for the tidiness, organisation and rotation of stock in the food storeroom
· Clean, disinfect and maintain to a high standard of cleanliness set by management, animal accommodation, isolation and exercise areas; storage, laundry, treatment and destruction facilities. Also staff facilities including kitchen and toilets
· Ensure building/exercise areas are secure, check before work commences and when work finishes
Attend to the needs of individual animals including: -
· Responsible for ensuring that all animals are weighed, exercised, trained, groomed
· Administer first aid, treatments and medications as directed
· Routine animal behaviour monitoring/assessment prior to rehoming.
· Report any faulty equipment, lighting, heating, ventilation equipment etc to the appropriate authority within the establishment.
· Attend to the needs of the client/customer/general public, face to face or via the telephone. Liaise with colleagues in other departments/RSPCA Branch worker/voluntary helpers
· Use Branch software ASM
· Drive the establishment vehicle on Society business –if applicable
· Attend to the needs of the client/ customer/ general public.

While at work all staff are required to:
- Take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions.

JOB CONTEXT
· Work is assigned by the Animal Centre Supervisor.
· Work is carried out in accordance with RSPCA rules for Branches
· Work is assessed through regular one to one meetings, team meetings and annual appraisals with the Animal Centre Manager
· The post holder is part of front line staff, maintaining good customer relations and projecting a professional image for the Society.
· The post is a non-management direct animal care role within the Centre
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
· Attend and participate in any training events considered appropriate by the Animal Centre Manager
· The post holder will be required to complete the society standard procedures.
· To carry out any other duties that may be required, as directed by the Animal Centre/Deputy Manager
· Post holders need to be aware that this the role is physically demanding /challenging
· Participate in any fundraising or publicity event that the Animal Centre/Deputy Manager considers appropriate
Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months
