A. MAIN JOB PARAMETERS
JOB TITLE: Animal Care Assistant
LOCATION: Little Valley Animal Shelter, Black Hat Lane, Bakers Hill, Exeter
EX2 9TA
REPORTING TO: Shelter Manager
RESPONSIBLE N/A
FOR:
SALARY: £11.00 per hour
HOURS: F/T (37.5 hours per week)
B. OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB
Due to continued growth and expansion, we are looking to recruit a new member of staff to join our passionate team to undertake all work directly related to the care and rehoming of the animals at the shelter and any other centre duties that may be required.
C. PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
The job role will be varied, but the main duties include:
- Routine exercising of animals within the confines of the Shelter and elsewhere when appropriate
- Preparation and administering of drugs and medicines, either by injection or other methods to animals in the Shelter in accordance with regulations governing their use and preparation and serving of animal food
- Preparation and handling of animals for inspection and/or treatment by a Veterinary
Surgeon or other authorised person at the Shelter
- Grooming of animals, including remedial applications for skin conditions where necessary
- Simple clinical examination of animals on arrival at the Shelter and before they are rehomed
- Administering of simple first aid to animals and the changing of dressings
- Transportation of animals between the Shelter and the Veterinary Practice for the purposes of examinations and neutering
- Assist with and implement behaviour/training programmes under the supervision of the
Shelter Manager and Deputy Manager
- Maintain reports, diaries, food charts and any other paperwork, to ensure these are written up clearly and updated daily so that colleagues may use them
- Writing reports to include recommendations for their rehoming to be used on the Shelter’s website and animal posters. Update website to ensure all information is kept up to date
- Ensure the suitability of potential homes by interviewing potential adopters

- Ensure compliance with all health and safety procedures and training
- Attend training courses as required
- Regular cleaning and disinfecting of buildings at the Shelter, including animal accommodation, treatment rooms and any other communal areas
- Cleaning and disinfecting utensils used for animal food and drink, including kitchen equipment
- Assisting in reception duties from time to time as may be required
- Participating in promotional activities for the Shelter, including involvement in press articles
- To work on a rota basis which will include covering weekends and bank holidays
- Any other reasonable duties that the work of the Shelter may require from time to time as directed by the animal Care Supervisor/Shelter Manager
D. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Must be confident and able to evidence handling a variety of domestic animals
- Hold a full UK driving licence
- To maintain a professional attitude at all times when representing the Branch
- To recognise and act on employee’s duty to co-operate with H&S matters; to wear/use personal protective equipment and report any shortcoming H&S to the duty manager
- To maintain branch confidentiality and observe all GDPR requirements relating to information accessed for the above duties
