Salary Range

Band 8 – £30,621 – £34,833 (Increasing to £30,876 – £35,124 from September 2023 following a transitional pay award period)


Applications are invited for the post of Analyst within the High Harm Team, part of the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU). The aim of the NEROCU is to reduce the impact, and increase the disruption, of serious and organised crime within the region and beyond. We target those areas of criminality we believe pose the greatest regional threats to the people and businesses within the area we cover, working collaboratively with other UK law enforcement agencies and partners from both private and public sectors. The NEROCU will directly influence the capabilities of these groups stifling and reducing their criminal activity.


The Analytical role is based at Sunderland and provides an exciting opportunity for applicants to work within an environment where NEROCU staff work alongside NCA colleagues, supporting the most sensitive Policing capabilities.

The role:

This is an exciting and unique role, where you will gain first-hand experience of Serious and Organised Crime, leading on Analytical work contributing to the vigorous pursuit of organised crime groups in work which safeguards and protects vulnerable members of our communities in the North East Region.

We are looking for individuals who are methodical, tenacious, and able to clearly demonstrate an ability to problem solve whilst identifying a range of solutions. You will need to demonstrate resilience and real confidence in your ability to make decisions that will affect operational activity, based on sound research and analysis. You will be required to rationalise your decisions to senior officers while only disclosing appropriate information within legal frameworks.


There will be an operational requirement to work closely with the relevant investigation team, to support and attend meetings with CPS, Prosecuting Counsel and Judge in Chambers as appropriate. This will require the production of analytical products, evidential statements and to attend Crown Court to give evidence as a professional witness.


As a successful candidate you will:

Be a confident communicator, both orally and in written reports, and must be able to demonstrate the ability to make reasoned decisions, working in a fast moving, pressurised operational environment, whilst robustly explaining your rationale.


Possess and maintain the highest levels of integrity and confidentiality, demonstrating a responsible attitude towards information security, and the protection of covert policing techniques. A knowledge of covert policing would be desirable but is not essential.


Key Responsibilities:

Represent NEROCU, as required, give presentations and attend briefings, seminars and conferences; liaising with police personnel, partner agencies and external organisations to gather and share information and intelligence and coordinate analytical products.


Identify, plan and conduct data collection and integration to meet analysis requirements; tasking researchers to assist in the collection of data.


Identify opportunities and implement solutions using data analytical techniques (e.g. programming) to manage and interpret large and complex datasets.

Ability to analyse and overlay a range of data types, which include, but are not limited to communications data, geolocation data, financial information (including cryptocurrency), ANPR, intelligence, advanced open source (including dark web).

Research and analyse varied sources of telecoms data and incoming intelligence utilising all available systems, whilst providing detailed tactical updates for supervision and operational teams.

Ensure the quality, secure handling, and dissemination of intelligence, maintaining confidentiality, sensitivity, and duty of care, in line with NEROCU policy.

Build good working relationships with both internal and external partners, including other Police Forces, NCA, and other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA).

Comply with all relevant legislation, guidance, and best practice in all aspects of the role.


Liaise with officers and staff of all ranks in order provide appropriate information and briefings, robustly explaining limitations created by intelligence sensitivity where appropriate.


Understand security and integrity of intelligence.


Understand the sensitivity of intelligence sources and techniques adopted.


Liaise with other national Units where operational crossover exists and identify intelligence opportunities.


Identify opportunities to develop intelligence through analytical functions.


Work closely with operational teams in arranging the most appropriate operational response(s) to investigations.


This is a full time agile-working post which consists of a blend of home working and office based.


Essential Skills:

Significant experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and other Analytical systems.


An ability to manage and interpret significant data-sets in both slow time and time critical situations.


Experience in identifying intelligence gaps with a demonstrable ability to prioritise, evidence, research, and effectively problem solve.


Demonstrate a high level of computer literacy and effective interpersonal communication skills, including verbal and written. The post holder will be articulate, methodical, conscientious, and concise.


Work effectively with minimum supervision whilst remaining team focussed.


Ability to work under pressure, prioritise workloads, and produce accurate work within tight deadlines.


Ability to mitigate Threat, Harm and Risk in time critical situations, demonstrating effective communication, decision making, and documenting rationale.


Desirable skills:

Experience of working in an intelligence / information field.


An understanding of the use of intelligence and evidence by LEA.


An understanding and working knowledge of legislation including Investigatory Powers Act 2016 and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 200


Knowledge of the National Intelligence Model (NIM) and NPCC Guidance on the Management of Police Information (MOPI)


Knowledge of Police systems and Policing with current legislation, policies, and procedures (e.g. GDPR, Human Rights)


Intelligence Professionalisation Programme (IPP) Accreditation or equivalent qualification (such as National Intelligence Analysis Training (NIAT)), or proven experience in an intelligence function


An interest in, and be willing to, maintain personal knowledge of changes in IT and communications technology


Please note, as part of this role, you may be required to undertake additional training and CPD commensurate with the role type and departmental resilience. This could include areas including, but not limited to, Telecoms and Research functions. The key responsibilities is not an exhaustive list and additional analytical and research tasks will be required as appropriate to role and business needs.
