Job description

Job Introduction

We are looking for an Advisor to join our Information Rights team. This is a permanent role based in London and there is likely to be a mixture of office and home working.

Our team works to ensure that all of the BBCs activities (in the Public Service Groups) are carried out in line with the BBCs legal obligations under its Charter and EU law particularly in the areas of Data Protection, and Freedom of Information.

The BBC Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice and assistance across the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBCs legal strategy. The Legal Division is led by the BBC’s General Counsel. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment, Litigation, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial and Engineering and Competition and Regulatory Law.

Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we provide advice and support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and relatively fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies.

Main Responsibilities

Working as an Advisor within a small team, you will play a key role in the running of the BBCs Freedom of Information (FOI) and Data Protection Act (DPA) processes. Communicating with the public and answering requests under FOI and DPA, drafting and processing requests, and helping train and support BBC Staff. There will also be opportunities to advise and assist on more general Information Rights matters.

Are you the right candidate?

You will need significant knowledge of DP/FOI compliance combined with a good depth of experience of file and case management of FOI requests and Subject Access Requests. You will be used to providing legal or compliance advice and working to very tight regulatory deadlines. Along with relevant experience in a research/senior administrative/broadcasting or related role, you will possess high level organisational skills and the ability to remain calm, organised and focused under pressure. A good communicator, you will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to handle sensitive information discreetly. Experience of drafting letters and short reports is required, along with strong IT skills.

As an equal opportunity employer we welcome applications from candidates with a diverse background.

We're particularly interested in hearing from applicants with disabilities (seen and unseen) for this role. If you're in this category and think our team might be the place for you, do please get in touch if there is any additional support you would find helpful in the recruitment process. We really want all candidates to have the best possible chance to showcase themselves.
