The Role

You’ll do lots of different things as you’ll work across a variety of departments. Each one offers a range of roles, diverse challenges and interesting insights. Day-to-day, you’ll be organising meetings, managing information and records, booking travel, looking after visitors and providing essential support to our intelligence officers.

About You
Forget what you think you know about admin. We’re after lots of initiative and great organisational skills. If you’re organised, methodical and proactive, you already have some of the key skills required. You’ll have a passion for providing excellent customer service, and the ability to communicate with people at all levels of our business. No matter your background, if you’re keen to learn new skills and have a good eye for detail, you’ll have all the makings of an excellent Admin Officer.

You’ll need two GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English, at grades A*-C / 9-4. Or, you’ll have relevant experience within an office and/or admin role and be confident with Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Training and Development
We’re hugely committed to staff development. You’ll attend a short induction course when you join, where you’ll also be assigned a ‘buddy/mentor’. They’ll help show you around and settle you in to your new role. Throughout your career with us, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a range of personal development and job specific courses tailored to the area you’re working in. Whether they’re run by our own academy or you’re simply knowledge sharing, you’ll never stop learning. Our Admin Officers have even created a peer support group, where you can share ideas, organise events and build connections.

You’ll receive a starting salary of between £23,998 - £26,790 (pro rata dependent on location) plus other benefits including:

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. What to Expect
Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order:
- Eligibility questions – you’ll answer a number of questions based on the requirements for the role.
- Initial form – you’ll create a personal account and complete our equal opportunities monitoring questions. If you do not feel comfortable completing equal opportunities monitoring, there is a ‘prefer not to say’ option for each question.
- Application form – you’ll be asked to complete an application which will cover relevant experience, your motivation for applying and some situational judgement questions aligned to being an Admin Officer, but which require no prior knowledge or experience of the role.
- To process your application, it is essential that you provide all the information requested in the application form. Our recruitment team will complete an application sift and successful applicants will be invited to the next stage which is a telephone interview.
- Online interview – this interview will take place online over a video conferencing system. You won’t be required to visit any of our premises. This interview will further explore that you have the potential skills and motivation to join MI5/GCHQ.
- Security interview – this interview will take place in London, Cheltenham or Manchester, depending on the role and location you have applied for, and is an important part of the selection process. It’s an interview to explore your life and experiences, and it’s not a competency or capability-based interview. We have taken appropriate measures to ensure that our buildings are COVID secure and this interview will take place in line with current government guidance around social distancing and COVID procedures.
Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process in order to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 - 9 months to process including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.
Our Vetting
To work in this role, you will need the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). It’s something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community has to go through and it can take some time. As part of the DV process you will be asked to fill in a detailed questionnaire and attend an interview with a vetting officer. In your interview the vetting officer will have a thorough, compassionate and honest discussion with you about you as a person and your life experiences, to ensure holding a DV clearance is right for you. You don’t need to do any preparation for your vetting interview, just be honest and be yourself. All applicants for DV are treated impartially and consistently, irrespective of gender, race, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation and other protected characteristics.
