Applications are invited for the position of a Band 2 Radiography Department Assistant (RDA) to work within the busy Radiology Directorate of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

The post will be based across both University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital of Llandough. The areas of Radiology that require RDA support run 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We are searching for an enthusiastic applicant to join the team who will support the Radiographers with their workloads and provide excellent patient care whilst undertaking administrative roles effectively.

Radiology Department Assistant (Bank)

The above post at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. University Hospital of Wales has become vacant within the busy Radiology Directorate of the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic, highly motivated individuals with a flexible approach to work within our specialised multi-disciplinary team. The post holder

will be based in University Hospital of Wales and will be required to work in the University Hospital of Llandough or other sites to support the work of the clinical staff throughout the Department.

This post will be primary based in MRI and CT area of Radiology. There will also be some clerical duties, as well as portering duties.

Previous experience working in the healthcare environment is an advantage but not essential as training will be provided.

To assist patients in all areas of the department and deal with them in a caring manner. This will involve checking patient’s details, taking them to the appropriate area for examination, giving them simple instructions about the examination and supporting them during the examination.

To assist Radiographers and Radiologists by carrying out non-radiographic duties which include assisting, supporting and chaperoning patients throughout imaging procedures, image processing and clerical duties as required.

To ensure that daily workload is completed in an efficient manner and that all patients are well cared for.

Collectively, the Radiology Department Assistants will be required to demonstrate commitment to provide out of hours and weekend work which could include Bank Holiday periods.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL

1. Have knowledge of the working procedures of all imaging modalities and the suitable patient preparation for each area in line with departmental practices.
2. Accompany inpatients and outpatients to and from examination rooms. To include porter patients in chairs and trolleys around the department and other areas as required.
3. Chaperone patients during imaging procedures.
4. To care for the patient’s needs and to attend to their welfare in accordance with safe working practice.
5. To use appropriate departmental emergency procedures for assistance when required as directed by the Radiographer.

1. Assist Radiographer with manual handling using appropriate and safe techniques.
2. Obtain previous records when required.
3. Check and maintain the stock levels of consumables and linen in each room. Report need for re-orders.
4. Process X-Ray cassettes as requested by operator.
5. On behalf of operator document visit, examination and procedure details. Including dose, pharmaceuticals used and operator details for patient examinations.
6. Assist with clerical duties whilst ensuring the accurate input of patient information onto the radiology computer system RAD.I.S.2
7. Be conversant with the use of Digital Radiography, Computerised Radiography and P.A.C.S. imaging systems.
8. Prepare and lay out trolleys in preparation for aseptic procedures e.g. biopsy/drainage in line with departmental protocols.
9. Prepare and support the radiographer when administering oral contrast agents to patients prior to C.T. examinations as directed by the Senior Radiographer.
10. Attend to used equipment after procedures, being mindful of C.O.S.S.H. regulations at all times. Pack specialised equipment in preparation for sterilisation.
11. Ensure the transfer of specimens from interventional procedures to the appropriate laboratory.
12. Use RAD.I.S.2 to book inpatient appointments when required and to enable the creation of work lists.
13. Provide assistance for interventional / non-interventional specialised procedures as directed by Radiographer / Radiologist.
14. Provide assistance when preparing the patient for MRI by undertaking a patient safety checklist which will be countersigned by an MRI radiographer before examination.
15. To support the mentoring, assessment and supervision of novice RDA staff during their training period.
16. Collectively the RDA’s will be required to demonstrate commitment to provide out of hours and weekend work which could include Bank Holiday periods.

PROFESSIONAL
1. Follows departmental standard operating procedures in the area of work.
2. Ensure the safe removal and storage of patient possessions as part of patient preparation before examination.
3. Have a duty to ensure proper careful use of any imaging equipment that you use and have access to in your normal working day.
4. Report incidence or near misses occurring in own area of work in line with health and safety polices of the UHB.
5. To ensure that examination rooms are kept clean and tidy in the area of duty.
6. In compliance with I.R.(M.E.)R. check patient identification matches documentation and RAD.I.S. Inform Radiographer / Radiologist of any discrepancy.
7. To comply with the Data Protection Act, Access to Health Records Act and legislation issued in relation to confidential data at all time.
8. Recognise and support the equality, diversity and rights of patients and colleagues in line with Health Board’s Policy.

COMMUNICATION
1. Liaise with porters for transfer of patients.
2. Will be required to communicate directly with patients, overcoming any barriers to communication when checking details or giving instructions during examination.
3. Will communicate with doctors, other clinical staff, clerical staff, and other hospitals, answering queries and providing information on patient procedures and preparation.
4. Liaise with Clerical and Portering staff to assist in the provision of an efficient, patient centred service.
5. Liaise with wards to arrange appropriate patient preparation for examinations and safe transfer to the department.
6. Respond to general telephone enquiries concerning appointment times and/or inpatient preparation for examinations. Direct further queries to either a Radiographer or Radiologist.
