Job description

An exciting and rewarding opportunity has arisen within the Stroke and Rehabilitation Team for an Activities Co-ordinator. This is a part-time role working afternoons 3 days per week providing activities and a stimulating environment for our stroke patients through their rehabilitation journey and recovery.

These are the key areas of the job

1. Maintain patient and staff confidentiality at all times.

2. Work with colleagues to promote a conducive environment by assisting in the control of infection; having an awareness of current practices/policies and participating in decontamination duties.

3. Maintain good working relationships and communication with all colleagues.

4. Assist in developing a therapeutic and compassionate environment that meets the needs of patients.

5. Be familiar and comply at all times with relevant operational, personnel, health & safety policies, procedures and protocols applicable to the post.

6. Develop and plan activities for patients that are complimentary to their rehabilitation.

7. Oversee and create promotional materials for events.

8. To organise and facilitate lunch clubs for patients to socialise at mealtimes and promote independence.

9. To promote and maintain relationships with The Stroke Association.

10. To utilise the Stroke garden within the hospital with all appropriate patients.

11. To display any activities done by our patients for visitors to see.

12. To utilise all equipment in our dedicated activities/day room with all appropriate patients.

13. This role will involve some physical moving and handling of patients transporting them from the ward to various activities or to the Stroke Graden.

The stroke unit at Chesterfield compromises of 35 beds which are a mixture of acute stroke and stroke rehabilitation. We are a friendly and diverse team. We strive to provide the best patient care. Our team is made up of Consultants, doctors, matron, clinical nurse specialists, sisters, HCAs, discharge coordinators, receptionists, domestics, physios, Occupational therapists, dietitian and speech and language therapists.

As an Activities Coordinator on Eastwood Ward Stroke Unit you will help to create a stimulating environment for our patients. You will devise imaginative, fun and motivational activities that suit every interest and ability. You will need to be diplomatic in your approach to persuade reluctant patients to participate in activities as part of their rehabilitation. You will spend time getting to know the patients and create activity programmes to maximise wellbeing, independence and social engagement to compliment the patient’s rehabilitation. Due to the disabilities a stroke can cause you will need to ensure activities created and being used to help with a patient’s rehabilitation can be suited to allow patients with weakness and speech impairments to also participate and can be tailored to meet their needs.

We also have the use of a stroke garden which has just undergone a revamp this year and part of the role will be to encourage patients to use the stroke garden and ensure this is maintained and activities can be completed in here when the weather permits.

The stroke unit also holds fundraising events throughout the year (Summer garden party, Christmas carol concert etc) and part of the activities role is to help organises these events and ensure previous patients of the unit have been invited to these.

The Activities Co-ordinator although part of the Stroke Unit Team is a stand alone position so will offer opportunities to own and develop the role so requires somebody with a confident and proactive personality.

Moving and Handling of patients is also a requirement of this role. after appropriate training as you will be transporting patients to their activity.
