Sheridan Maine is working in partnership with our client, based in Southampton, to secure a Financial Accountant for a 4-month Fixed Term Contract.

In this position, you will be working with the Financial Accountant in delivering precise and timely financial accounting information to both internal and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on customer satisfaction. You will be required to work in the office 2 days a week.

Your responsibilities as the Financial Accountant will include:
  • Preparing annual financial statements
  • Assisting in the preparation and auditing of the organisation's financial statements
  • Managing the day-to-day Treasury Management function
  • Supporting the preparation of VAT returns and forecasts, participating in negotiations with HMRC regarding VAT matters, and providing guidance and training to staff on VAT issues while ensuring compliance with regulations
  • Overseeing the capital expenditure budget
  • Producing the corporation tax return
  • Analysing and modelling the impacts of changing legislation and policies
  • Collaborating with the Senior Financial Accountant to continually review systems and procedures, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing agreed-upon enhancements
  • Providing cover for the Senior Financial Accountant when necessary

The successful Financial Accountant will require the following skills and experience:
  • Part Qualified Accountant (ACCA or CIMA)
  • A strong understanding of current accounting standards, including FRS102 and SORP, as well as knowledge of VAT legislation, is essential
  • Familiarity with the Higher Education (HE) sector would be advantageous
  • Prior experience in working within a financial accounting team is required
  • Experience in the public sector would be beneficial
  • Demonstrated expertise in process improvement
  • Proficiency in IT and spreadsheet applications, with a proven track record of using Microsoft software such as Excel and Word
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and in report writing, with the ability to engage with individuals at all levels
  • A motivated team player who can work efficiently under deadlines and take initiative when necessary
  • Strong numerical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to analyse and interpret data
  • Adherence to confidentiality requirements as necessary
