Reporting to Financial Controller, the Financial Accountant will primarily be responsible for general ledger accounting tasks, up to and including financial reporting, for multiple entities. This individual will perform data entry, account reconciliations, compile and complete data required for statutory reports and other financial documents.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES / DELIVERABLES
· Responsible for month end journal entries preparation, balance sheet reconciliations, and GL coding review and correction;
· Perform complex reconciliations of general ledger and other designated ledgers and accounts such as bank, trust, donation, and other records and accounts, and resolving problems and discrepancies independently and taking corrective action;
· Ensuring that all financial data recording is consistent with accounting policies and procedures for the organizations;
· Liaising with external agencies such as the Island Health, Veterans Affairs Canada and BC Housing, including manual invoicing;
· Assisting in developing, implementing, and administrating accounting methods and procedures, such as financial control procedures, by developing, recommending and, upon approval, implementing new procedures and service standards. Performing internal control reviews by checking and testing records as directed;
· Reconciling inter-entity accounts;
· Maintaining charts of accounts and recommending changes in alignment with reporting requirements;
· Partnering and coordinating with financial staff to resolve reporting issues;
· Looking for opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies while supporting and driving operational accounting best practices;
· Filing quarterly GST returns;
· Preparing monthly bank reconciliations;
· Recording bank deposits;
· Preparing process documentation to improve operational agility and simplify cross-training;
· Preparing coding guide and accounting policies/procedures for non-financial staff;
· Functioning as back-up for accounts payable and accounts receivable staff;
· Assisting with monthly reporting and analysis of departmental results including detailed variance reviews;
· Performing other duties as assigned.
SELECTION CRITERIA
· Minimum 5 years of equivalent experience in accounting
· Formal accounting education
· Previous experience in the not-for-profit sector
· Demonstrated commitment to meaningful, informative, and accurate financial reporting
· Excellent current computer skills including Excel proficiency
· Experience in designing and implementing accounting processes, systems, and controls
· Must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently while meeting deadlines
· Strong reconciliation, analytical and problem solving abilities
· Excellent communication and collaboration skills
· Must be eligible to work with vulnerable adults under the BC Criminal Records Review Program
· Valid Criminal Records Check completed by the Criminal Record Review Program
· Must adhere to the immunization standards as established by the Province of BC now and as they are further developed

Salary: $70,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
