ABOUT SHORELINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
JOB SUMMARY
The Department is seeking applicants who have the ability to work effectively with students, staff, colleagues, and others in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and global competency. The successful candidate for this position will serve as an academic advisor to support Shoreline’s non-immigrant, international students. Responsibilities include assisting F-1 students with successfully navigating the U.S. higher education system, advising students about the College’s degrees, certificates, and international high school completion program requirements, assisting students with academic planning (with a strong emphasis on university transfer), and participating in the coordination and implementation of the program’s advising initiatives and systems.
Primary Responsibilities include:
- Providing ongoing, individual, and group advising (both in person, via email, and zoom) related to academic, professional/technical, extracurricular, cultural, language (ESL) and immigration issues such as:
- Comprehensive in-state and out-of-state university transfer processes/requirements
- Quarterly registration and new student advising on major-specific and general degree requirements
- International high school completion program requirements
- Evaluation of progress toward degree/certificate completion
- Academic Standards advising as necessary
- Developing written individual academic plans based on student goals, abilities, and interests, and transfer school requirements
- Providing referrals to appropriate campus, community and government resources/services
- Provide guidance on F1 rules and regulations
- Assisting with the academic and cultural orientation process for new international students
- Developing and updating content of workshops, handouts, and resources
- Presenting/facilitating workshops and small group seminars
- Developing and executing an annual plan for professional development
- Serving on college committees to represent and advocate for the needs of the Department and students served
- Interfacing with external departments to advocate for and improve the student experience
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, Psychology, Counseling, Student Services, Social Work, or closely related field
- Two (2) years of professional advising experience in educational planning and university transfer
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Database management systems, CRMs, and registration systems such as SEVIS, Slate, Starfish, and ctcLink
- Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technologies
SKILL IN
- Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
- Advising international students regarding immigration regulations
- Working with diverse students for career goal setting, transfer options, academic planning in a college setting
- Assisting students in choosing academic majors and career options
- Effective oral and written communication, including with those for whom English is a second language
- Adapting to a variety of advising situations/student styles, handling multiple tasks, prioritizing competing demands
- Demonstrated computer and technology skills used in advising students
- Strong interpersonal skills as evidenced by successful experience in working cooperatively and effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and others of diverse backgrounds
- Familiarly with a language other than English and cross-cultural experience including living/traveling abroad
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY
- Full-time, non-tenure track academic position with additional advising days available as needed, typically a 172-day / 1204 hours annual contract scheduled across a 12-month period between July 1 and June 30
- Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of work experience combined with education. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
OTHER CONDITIONS
This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the American Federation of Teachers Local #1950. In compliance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, proof of authorization to work in the United States will be required at the time of hire. Other conditions that may apply will be detailed upon offer of employment. This position is overtime exempt.

PART-TIME FACULTY POSITIONS
A part time faculty member becomes eligible for benefits at the beginning of the second consecutive quarter of half time or more employment at one or more Washington state institutions of higher education. Spring and fall quarters are considered consecutive quarters for benefits eligibility. Half time is determined based on each institution's definition of full time.
A part time faculty member must qualify each quarter they teach to maintain eligibility. Once eligible, part time faculty will be notified of their benefit and retirement options.
