Job description
The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an innovative, highly motivated, and culturally responsive Academic Advisor to join our team. Reporting to the Director of Advising, you will serve as primary academic advisor for approximately 100 undeclared first and second year Dietrich undergraduates and be responsible for maintaining detailed records for each student. This position will guide students along their educational journey at Carnegie Mellon University while serving as a secondary advisor to students after they have declared a major and been assigned a departmental advisor. You should demonstrate:
Core responsibilities include:
- Meets privately with students to review academic progress. Provides guidance in developing individualized, meaningful education plans for advisees which include fulfilling general educational and degree requirements, making academic progress and setting personal goals.
- Advises prospective students and families and represents the college at numerous admissions events, including evenings and weekends on occasion.
- Performs administrative tasks related to advising: maintaining student files and records, evaluating transfer credits and recommending academic actions. Prepares and submits weekly, monthly and annual effort reports.
- Maintains a strong understanding of University and College policies and procedures to provide information about campus-wide resources to enhance the student's overall educational experience.
- Through close monitoring and independent managing of student cases, determines when sensitive or complex matters should be brought to the attention of the Director of Advising.
- Engages with multiple student affairs offices, as needed - These offices may include Title IX, Counseling and Psychological Services as well as disability resources.
- Helps students in crisis make academic decisions including taking leaves of absence, withdrawing from the university or petitioning to go below full-time.
- Maintains composure, respect and integrity, and follows all the necessary processes and laws around student information sharing.
- Serves as a resource to departmental advisors, faculty, administrators, and students once they have declared their major regarding policies, procedures, and academic goals.
- Liaises with other resources on campus to provide holistic support for students.
- Serves on university and college-wide committees.
- Attends all meetings involving college & university advisors.
- Performs related duties and special projects as required.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience required.
- A genuine interest in and understanding of the courses taught by the humanities departments at Dietrich College is strongly preferred.
