Job summary
The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) profession in the Welsh Government supports a range of digital services across the whole organisation. As part of our DDaT profession, you will be a key part of the Data Science Unit team and will make a significant and direct contribution for the people of Wales.
Background
The Welsh Government is the devolved government for Wales with an annual budget of around £15 billion. We are responsible for key aspects of public life in Wales including health, education, the economy, transport, agriculture, and the environment. Welsh Ministers are supported by a workforce of more than 5,000 people with offices in Wales, London and overseas.
Welsh Government priorities are described in our government programme which sets out the ambitious commitments that will be delivered over the 5 year period 2021 to 2026. These will tackle the challenges that we face and improve the lives of people across Wales.

Digital transformation of public services is vital to delivering the services that the people of Wales expect and need. The Welsh Government currently delivers digital services to people and business across Wales. Led by our Chief Digital Officer, the Welsh Government is increasingly delivering more services online. The Chief Digital Officer provides a consultancy service of digital and data expertise to business areas across the Welsh Government.
The Welsh Governments Data Science Unit was established in April 2020. It sets out to show how data can be used differently by working with a range of teams across Welsh government. The unit also leads the profession, supporting others across the organisation in the use of data science tools and methods. We work in the open where we can and a number of our projects and aims are described in the Welsh Governments digital and data blog.

Person specification
An SEO Data Scientist will:
- Deliver project work utilising a range of techniques associated with data science including statistical modelling, machine learning, visualisation, natural language processing, geospatial analysis, image processing and automation for a broad range of Government areas.
- Support the continued testing and development of a data science platform within Welsh Government
- Lead small project teams and support junior members of staff in further developing their data science and project management skills.
- Engage with stakeholders to scope and identify data science projects that are feasible and impactful understanding where data science can add value to the organisation.
- Promote good working practises within the team – version control, reproducibility, code reviews, project management, agile working, knowledge sharing etc.
- Promote and present data science work both within and outside of the organisation
- Understand and practice good data principles with respect to ethics and privacy
- Keep up to date with the latest developments in data science and seek opportunities to test new methodologies.

There are 4 stages to the application and assessment process:
Stage 1 – Submit CV

Stage 2 – Sift of CV
After the closing date, all applicant’s CVs will be assessed.
Candidates who successfully demonstrate that they meet the minimum Job Specific Criteria will be sent an online skills test.
Stage 3 – Skills Test (Online)
The skills test will be scheduled from 24/04/2023 and you will have 7 calendar days to complete this test.
If you pass the online skills test, will then be invited to interview.
Interviews will be scheduled for week commencing 01/05/2023.
Stage 4 – Interview
Your interview will be based on the Behaviours/Skills and Job Specific Criteria outlined in the sections of this advert.
At Interview stage you will be asked questions which will allow you to provide evidence (including specific examples) of how you meet each of the Job Specific Criteria and Behaviours and Skills required for this role.
Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
