Job description

The Elementary school instructor will design and implement educational curriculum in vital subjects including but not limited to reading, writing, social studies, and mathematics. Instructors are responsible for fostering positive relationships with students. Balancing an academically rigorous learning environment with the social/emotional needs of students is essential. It is the instructor's role to help students develop critical thinking skills, learn to solve problems and discover their strengths.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with elementary school aged children. We are specifically seeking positive, energetic individuals, who are comfortable with youth. Patience is a must, as is a willingness to engage with the students and staff.

This is an exempt, salaried position. Successful candidates must be able to commit to working for the full academic year (185 days).

  • Year-round schedule: annual position covers mid-June through March/Early April

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and develop an engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and curriculum guidelines
  • Homeroom teacher duties: attendance, community circles, monitoring of student health and well-being
  • Design and implement individual lesson plans in core academic subjects using a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to various learning styles and needs
  • Prepare materials for lessons, assignments and tests
  • Evaluate, correct and grade student performance regularly to keep students updated on how they are progressing
  • Discuss academic difficulties and/or behavioral concerns with students as they arise
  • Communicate progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as necessary, other faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Manage the classroom effectively to minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
  • Watch closely for students who are struggling with emotional problems, learning differences or situations at home, and help guide them to appropriate resources for support
  • Participate in a variety of meetings (e.g. associated grade level, faculty, in-services, subject, committee, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
  • Enforce safety and security measures for students, staff and guests
  • Provide recess and/or lunch supervision of students (schedule dependent)
  • Provide arrival and/or dismissal supervision of students (schedule dependent)
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
  • Identify and schedule field trips for homeroom class; includes arranging transportation and identifying additional chaperones as necessary
  • Work with school administration to identify, schedule and attend outdoor education experience (1x per year) with your homeroom class
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences (2 x per year) according to a predetermined schedule with both daytime and evening opportunities for parents.
  • Prepare annual budget request on schedule requested by administration

Other functions of the job include but are not limited to the following

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds v
  • Encourage parent and community involvement
  • Participate in appropriate professional activities (e.g. committee involvement: Calendar, Publication Review, Website Development, Disciplinary Board, Hiring etc.)
  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, student performance, youth leadership

Personnel Procedures

  • Work Day: 7:50 - 3:15pm. Outdoor supervision begins at 8:00 am (schedule dependent), with class running from 8:30 am to 3:00pm. Morning breaks and lunch breaks are incorporated into all schedules.
  • Pay Days & Location: All employee checks will be available at Beechwood School on the 26th of each month commencing in September. Checks will be mailed to employees if the foundation is so instructed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic principles and techniques of first aid.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Familiarity with and willingness to support anti-bias in education to promote healthy community ,
  • Familiarity with technology for instructional purposes and maintaining effective school communication
  • Work with a variety of learning abilities, including those with special needs in an inclusive classroom setting
  • Work as a part of a team. Able to contribute to grade team and content team meetings. Collaboration with other staff and a willingness to compromise is essential.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the youth, instructional staff and school administration.
  • Communication in verbal and written English.
  • Work outdoors and indoors in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift up to 15 pounds and set-up and take-down supplies and classroom equipment.
  • Prolonged periods standing to teach, moving to circulate among students, working on a computer, and sitting at a desk.

Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree (required)
  • Teaching Credential (preferred)
  • Prior classroom experience working with middle school aged youth is encouraged

License or Certificate:

Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a US government issued form of identification.
