Our industrial placements are for a period of six to 12 months, during which, you will be working in the Information Management team within the Transportation unit, TPN.


TPN help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle.

Outside of the transport sector, we also play leading roles in complex multi-disciplinary major civil engineering projects e.g. water and power tunnels and provide speciality advisory services in diverse areas that include technology applications and socio-economics.

Our projects encompass flagship infrastructure projects in the UK and globally, including high speed rail and high-profile international metro projects. The team has also been responsible for the development of industry leading digital tools, sustainability and carbon counting tools, and digital solutions for clients such as the Department of Health and the Department of Education.

In this job you will:

  • Play a key role to support the digital delivery of major infrastructure projects, using both our internal and emerging digital tools to drive continuous improvements

  • Develop, maintain, and optimise information-based systems, this might be database focused or other leading-edge solutions

  • Help our engineers and delivery teams to manage, store and communicate this information more effectively

  • Work alongside project managers and engineers to collect data, build data visualisations and apply analytics to provide insights and help inform decisions.


  • Train people on our state-of-the-art digital tools. This could include supporting the assessment or setup of new tools under the direction of our Information Managers


  • We solve new problems each day, you will be part of our diverse team working across many different projects helping us to share our knowledge, so we solve similar problems quickly.


Candidate Specification

To join us for an industrial trainee placement you must be studying an undergraduate degree from a STEM background, that incorporates a placement year. If you are in the final year of your undergraduate studies, or are studying towards a postgraduate qualification, please apply to our Graduate Programme.

You’ll be working with graduates, experienced professionals, and other students so a placement with us is the perfect opportunity to learn from a variety of people while understanding our values and culture. It’s also a great chance to get involved with real projects while gaining relevant experience.

We do not have a formal structure for our placements, so you can really make the role your own. The more you get involved and the more questions you ask, the more you will gain from your experience with us.

As well as having one of the specific degrees listed above, we are looking for students with the following characteristics:
  • A methodical approach to problem solving
  • The ability to use your initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and team members.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail with the ability to demonstrate accurate technical drawings and good report writing.
